About the Job

The Production Engineering team at Canva focuses on software engineering for the hardest reliability problems in Canva's infrastructure. This role involves writing software that changes how production behaves at scale, working as a senior software engineer embedded long-term in high-risk technical areas alongside product teams to shape how changes land in production. The work emphasizes writing code to improve reliability, efficiency, and resilience, rather than operationalizing systems or running alerts.

Role & Responsibilities

  • ● Own an engagement area by taking long-term accountability for one of Canva's highest-risk technical domains (e.g., sharding core data stores, resource utilization, distributed systems challenges at scale) embedded alongside the team that owns it.
  • ● Write production software, instrumenting, refactoring, and rebuilding pieces that cause problems at scale.
  • ● Collaborate, pair, mentor, and learn from fellow production engineers.
  • ● Strive for fewer incidents, faster recovery, lower severity, and improved latency.
  • ● Make platform contributions by identifying patterns that need shared capabilities and seeding platform work that scales beyond the engagement.
  • ● Change how every other engineer builds on top of a system by deeply understanding it.
  • ● Develop trusted relationships with your team as a secondee.
  • ● Guide teams towards shipping at velocity, with more confidence and less toil.

Requirements

Experience

  • ● Experience with reliability work within large-scale distributed systems where you wrote the fix when things broke.

Skills

  • ● Previously worked as an engineer embedded in or partnering closely with a product or feature team.
  • ● Built real things in Java, Go, Rust, C++, or a comparable systems language at production scale with commercial depth.
  • ● Navigated sharding, replication, failure modes, and consistency tradeoffs in real distributed systems.
  • ● Ability to parachute into an unfamiliar codebase, orient quickly, find where the problem actually lives, and fix it.
  • ● Proven ability to make things better in systems through wisdom and trust, demonstrating influence without authority.
  • ● Deep understanding of the network stack.
