About the Company
Empower the world to design. We're a global online visual communications platform on a mission to empower the world to design. Featuring a simple drag-and-drop user interface and a vast range of templates ranging from presentations, documents, websites, social media graphics, posters, apparel to videos, plus a huge library of fonts, stock photography, illustrations, video footage, and audio clips, anyone can take an idea and create something beautiful on Canva on any device, from anywhere in the world. Since our launch in 2013, we've had the crazy big goal of making design accessible to everyone. We were founded on the belief that people shouldn't need to understand complex software to unlock their creativity. We're leveling the playing field and democratizing access to design and visual communication by empowering 100% of the world to communicate in a way that was once limited to the 1%. We've always had a deeper mission surrounding Canva - which we talk about as our 'simple' two-step plan: to build one of the world's most valuable companies, and to do the most good we possibly can. We're committed to our core value of Being a Force for Good, so as the value of our company grows, so too does our ability to have a positive impact on the world. Software Development Specialties: Design, Graphic Design, Web app, Software engineering, Startup, Technology, Innovation, Publishing, product design
Responsibilities
- ● Take ownership of the build and release system for every native app Canva ships, which is currently on the critical path for the biggest client-side re-architecture in Canva's history.
- ● Own the Bazel rules, the monorepo, the release pipeline, and the entire native foundation that hundreds of engineers build against daily.
- ● Set the technical direction for iOS and Android build systems, the monorepo migration, and the React Native build pipeline.
- ● Define what "good" looks like for build reliability, release safety, and monorepo strategy across both platforms, with a 12-month horizon.
- ● Own the roadmap for Bazel build rules, React Native bundling, and codegen, making trade-offs between short-term fixes and long-term foundations (Build architecture).
- ● Mature Canva's mobile release and deployment tooling, including OTA and staged rollout, to make shipping mobile predictable rather than fragile (Release infrastructure).
- ● Lead the staged migration of mobile repos into Canva's monorepo, owning build, test, and release continuity throughout (Monorepo migration).
- ● Set the quality gating strategy across the build pipeline, surfacing reliability and speed problems before they're handed to you (CI/CD strategy).
- ● Evolve the React Native build pipeline into a shared foundation that serves both web and mobile, not just mobile in isolation (Cross-platform foundations).
- ● Work across Mobile Workflows, Cross Platform, Build Platform, and DevX to pull fragmented tooling into one coherent system (Stakeholder alignment).
- ● Build monitoring and health signals for builds and releases, and mentor engineers so the standards you set outlast any one project (Team leverage).
Requirements
- ● Deep, hands-on expertise with Bazel, Gradle, or Xcode build systems at production scale.
- ● A track record of scoping and delivering complex projects that span multiple teams - migrations, monorepo consolidation, or build infrastructure at scale.
- ● Strong native engineering background in iOS, Android, or both, with a real point of view on where cross-platform tooling helps and where it doesn't.
- ● Experience owning CI/CD or release pipelines that other teams depend on, not just contributing to them.
- ● Ability to balance short-term delivery against long-term architecture and connect an external shift in tooling to a change in technical direction.
- ● Documentation and technical practices that have become the reference other engineers build on.
