About the Company

Empower the world to design. We're a global online visual communications platform on a mission to empower the world to design. Featuring a simple drag-and-drop user interface and a vast range of templates ranging from presentations, documents, websites, social media graphics, posters, apparel to videos, plus a huge library of fonts, stock photography, illustrations, video footage, and audio clips, anyone can take an idea and create something beautiful on Canva on any device, from anywhere in the world. Since our launch in 2013, we've had the crazy big goal of making design accessible to everyone. We were founded on the belief that people shouldn't need to understand complex software to unlock their creativity. We're leveling the playing field and democratizing access to design and visual communication by empowering 100% of the world to communicate in a way that was once limited to the 1%. We've always had a deeper mission surrounding Canva - which we talk about as our 'simple' two-step plan: to build one of the world's most valuable companies, and to do the most good we possibly can. We're committed to our core value of Being a Force for Good, so as the value of our company grows, so too does our ability to have a positive impact on the world. Software Development Specialties: Design, Graphic Design, Web app, Software engineering, Startup, Technology, Innovation, Publishing, product design

Responsibilities

  • ● Lead Embedded, one of Production Engineering's two teams
  • ● Lead a technically strong group of engineers, deliberately weighted toward senior talent, working simultaneously across several of Canva's most important production challenges
  • ● Safeguard critical data
  • ● Make software changes safer
  • ● Build reliability and observability into a major platform rewrite
  • ● Build tooling and frameworks to allow services to increase resilience to overload scenarios
  • ● Earn the trust of engineering leaders quickly
  • ● Help engineers navigate different technical and organisational environments
  • ● Stay close enough to the work to challenge assumptions and shape important technical decisions
  • ● Help decide which problems the team takes on, how engagements should work, what great looks like, and how we measure whether Production Engineering is having the impact we intended
  • ● Create an environment where experienced engineers can do their best work
  • ● Set direction, build psychological safety, give direct coaching and help senior engineers grow their technical and organisational influence
  • ● Focus Embedded on the production problems where it can make the biggest difference
  • ● Build trust with engineering leaders so the team is brought in early
  • ● Make impact visible through measurable outcomes
  • ● Work out how Embedded can run more engagements without losing the technical bar, coaching quality or close partnerships that make the model effective
  • ● Turn lessons from individual engagements into engineering practices, patterns and capabilities that can benefit teams across Canva
  • ● Develop senior engineers and engagement leads who can coach others, lead increasingly complex work and multiply the team's impact

Requirements

  • ● Experience leading highly experienced software engineers and technical leads through complex or ambiguous work
  • ● Ability to coach people operating with significant autonomy
  • ● Experience working in software environments where reliability, scalability and production risk genuinely mattered
  • ● Ability to build trust from a standing start, particularly in environments where influence mattered more than reporting lines
  • ● Experience leading significant technical initiatives spanning multiple teams or groups, from understanding the problem through to delivering an outcome
  • ● Ability to persuade teams to change how they build or operate software, even when they were busy, skeptical or already had an established way of working
  • ● Ability to communicate complex technical trade-offs to senior stakeholders
  • ● Ability to create an environment where engineers can challenge ideas, learn, receive direct feedback and do their best work
  • ● Strong grounding in computer science fundamentals, including concurrency, multithreading and data structures
  • ● Enough depth in languages such as Go, Python, Java or C++ to engage meaningfully with designs, implementation choices and technical trade-offs
